asked the Minister of Labour the number of unemployed registered for the previous week and the total amount paid in unemployment benefit?

On 10th April, the latest date for which figures are available, the number of persons registered as wholly unemployed in Great Britain was 1,648,748. In addition, 203,684 were claiming benefit while on short time. The amount paid in respect of the week ending on 5th April in unemployment benefit, including dependants' grants, was about £1,100,000.
