HC Deb 07 November 1921 vol 148 cc8-9
8. Mr. GILBERT

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether all the German ships allotted to this country have now been sold; and if he will state the number of ships and tonnage which have been bought by British, Allied, and other buyers, and the total amount realised from the sale?

Mr. BALDWIN

Apart from vessels transferred to Allies under special agreements, 423 ex-German vessels in all have been allotted to this country for sale. 392 of these have already been delivered, and 31 are still to come. Of the 392 vessels delivered 385 have been sold, 4 are awaiting sale, and 3 were lost before sale. Of the 385 vessels sold, 326 (gross tonnage 1,494,000) were bought by British subjects, 11 (gross tonnage 27,000) by Allies, and 48 (gross tonnage 195,000) by others.
