HC Deb 26 May 1921 vol 142 cc316-7
60. Mr. CLOUGH

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will consider the compilation of a cost of living index in the various Crown Colonies for the guidance and information of the inhabitants?

Mr. CHURCHILL

Steps have been taken in several Colonies to ascertain and record the variations in the cost of living since the War, but, owing to difference of conditions, it would not be practicable to compile an index on the lines adopted by the Beard of Trade for this country. Figures of the average cost of various articles consumed in the Colonies are, however, given in the Colonial Blue Book.
