HC Deb 25 May 1921 vol 142 cc123-4
8. Captain TERRELL

asked the Minister of Labour the amount of unemployment in the agricultural districts of England and Wales and how it compares with the total for this time last year?

Dr. MACNAMARA

I am afraid I cannot give separate statistics of all persons unemployed in agricultural districts as distinct from urban districts, but there were 2,764 shepherds, horsemen, cattlemen and labourers registered as unemployed at Employment Exchanges in England and Wales at 6th May, as com- pared with 2,792 a year ago. In addition there were 294 women and 228 juveniles in these occupations registered at 6th May, as compared with 67 women and 88 juveniles registered a year ago.

Captain TERRELL

Can the right hon. Gentleman say how many agricultural labourers are unemployed in England and Wales?

Dr. MACNAMARA

I will try and get the figures if my hon. Friend will put the question down.

Mr. J. JONES

Make the landowners liable to work.
