HC Deb 01 March 1921 vol 138 cc1600-1
57 and 58. Lieut.-Colonel JAMES

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) whether he will give particulars as to the value and amount of cigars of Havana manufacture cleared from bond since the imposition of the additional Budget duties, and corresponding details showing clearances, value, and amount of similar cigars during the corresponding period in the years 1918–19 and 1919–20;

(2) whether, in consequence of the heavy taxation imposed on Havana manufactured cigars, the Cuban Government has decided to impose a retaliatory duty of 40 per cent, or thereabouts on English goods imported into that island?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

In the case of goods cleared from bond, records are kept neither of the country of consignment nor of the values, and I regret, therefore, that I cannot supply my hon. and gallant Friend with the information he desires. As regards Question No. 58, I would refer him to my reply to the hon. Member for Wimbledon (Mr. Hood) on the 23rd February last.
