92. Sir J. D. REESasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the cost to the State of the Ministry of Munitions inquiry into the charges made by the hon. Member for East Bradford?
Mr. YOUNGThe direct cost to the State as far as it can be ascertained at present is in the neighbourhood of £1,500. No reliable estimate can be made of the indirect cost, although this must have been considerable.
Sir J. D. REESWhy is sanction given to these inquiries, which invariably result in the expenditure of money, without any profit to anybody concerned?
§ Mr. SPEAKERThe inquiry was authorised by the House.
