HC Deb 15 June 1921 vol 143 c404
60. Mr. ACLAND

asked the Lord Privy Seal what decision was arrived at by the Government in reference to the resolution passed in another place on the 7th July last, calling for the appointment of commissioners to wind up war departments and reduce other inflated establishments to a normal level?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Hilton Young)

For the reasons indicated in the course of the Debate referred to by the right hon. Member, the resolution in question is not one which the Government were able to adopt. I may, however, refer to the statement in this House on the 9th December last by my right hon. Friend, now the Lord Privy Seal, on the subject of the winding-up of certain temporary Departments and to the subsequent action relating to the subject, and also to the recent circular concerning reduction of expenditure. With reference to the general question of the reduction of Government staffs, I do not think that I can usefully add to the answer given yesterday to the hon. and gallant Member for Hulme (Lieut.-Colonel Nail).
