HC Deb 15 June 1921 vol 143 c386
11. Sir W. DAVISON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the great urgency of obtaining British citizenship for the children of parents of British blood born in Portugal and other foreign countries, and having regard to the desirability of agreeing to any necessary legislation with the self-governing dominions, he will take the necessary steps to have this matter brought up at the forthcoming Imperial Conference?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir J. Baird)

It does not lie within the Home Secretary's power, or within that of my hon. Friend, who has asked me to answer this question, to determine the subjects which can be dealt with at the coming conference of Prime Ministers, and I know their time will be very fully occupied. But if any opportunity can be found of advancing the consideration of this question, we shall do our best to make use of it.

Sir W. DAVISON

Will the Home Secretary make it his business to represent to the Prime Minister and those responsible for the agenda of the Imperial Conference the importance of this matter and the keenness with which it is felt by British subjects resident in foreign parts?

Sir J. BAIRD

Of course, that is done, but my hon. Friend might raise the question on Friday in Debate.
