HC Deb 15 June 1921 vol 143 c387
12. Sir T. POLSON

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether it is now proposed to salve H.M.S. "Glatton," sunk in Dover Harbour in the early days of the late War?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Mr. Amery)

The Admiralty have given full and continued consideration to the question of salving or dispersing His Majesty's Ship "Glatton" since she was sunk in the harbour in September, 1918. In view of all the circumstances, viz. that the wreck does not lie immediately in the fairway of ordinary navigation, that the hull is visible at all states of the tide and is suitably marked by night, their Lordships do not consider that the large expense that would be involved in attempting to raise or disperse the vessel, which is practically overturned, is justifiable, particularly at the present time of financial stringency.

Sir T. POLSON

Will my hon. and gallant Friend kindly look into this matter, from the point of view whether this operation might not be conducted profitably, and at the same time assist to relieve unemployment in the district?

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is this the first effort of the Anti-Waste party to save money?
