asked the President of the Board of Education whether he can state the number of provided schools in England and Wales where no religious teaching is given?

Mr. FISHER

The Board have no information on this subject. I may refer the hon. Member to Section 7 (3) of the Elementary Education Act, 1870, which declares that it shall be no part of the duties of His Majesty's Inspectors to inquire into any instruction in religious subjects given in public elementary schools. The Board believe, however, that there are very few public elementary schools in which religious instruction forms no part of the curriculum.
