47. Sir F. HALLasked the Lord Privy Seal if there are any British prisoners in the hands of the Turkish Government at Angora; if so, what is their number; whether any Nationalist Turks have been captured by the British forces; and if he will state what steps have been taken to secure the release of the British prisoners?
Mr. HARMSWORTHThere are 22 British prisoners in the hands of the Turkish Nationalists, and there are a number of Nationalists in British custody. The Government of Angora when previously approached refused to discuss the release of the British prisoners. It is hoped that the matter may be settled at the present conference.
Sir F. HALLIs it to be understood that this matter will be raised during the visit of the Turkish representatives to this country?
Sir F. HALLBut may I press the right hon. Gentleman upon this matter: whether we are to understand that it will be raised so that these British soldiers may be released?
Mr. HARMSWORTHI myself am not in a position to give that promise, but I will make representations to the heads of our delegation.
§ Captain ELLIOTSeeing that the Government refused to negotiate with the Bolshevists until our prisoners were released cannot they take the same course in respect to the prisoners in the hands of the Turks?
