HC Deb 18 April 1921 vol 140 cc1515-6
23. Mr. PERCY

asked the Minister of Transport if there is any general agreement between the railway companies and their employçs as to what notice has to be given on either side terminating the employment; and, if so, what is the period of notice?

Sir E. GEDDES

Railwaymen, under the terms of their engagement, ought to give notice before leaving the company's service. The period of such notice is usually a week.

Mr. PERCY

When the men were warned to come out on strike last Friday, had due notice been given by them, or on their behalf, to terminate their employment on that day?

Sir E. GEDDES

I cannot say. I do not know whether notices were given. I should think probably not.

Colonel MILDMAY

Would it not be possible to contrive in the future, in the interests of all parties, that the law shall be observed in this connection?

Sir E. GEDDES

I should be very glad to try to get people to observe their, contracts.

Major WATTS MORGAN

Will the Government also be asked to carry out their pledges under their agreements?
