HC Deb 13 April 1921 vol 140 cc1101-2
60. Mr. W. R. SMITH

asked the Minister of Health whether the cost of building houses is being reduced; and, if so, to what extent?

Sir A. MOND

Although the cost of building remains very high, there is no doubt that it is falling, but the extent varies with the districts concerned and the class of materials used. The general average of tenders accepted for houses was £950 in August last, £900 in November, and £855 in March.

Mr. SMITH

Seeing that this very substantial reduction in the cost of construction has taken place, is it necessary to have that large subsidy?

Sir A. MOND

That is one of the questions which I am going to look into.
