HC Deb 12 April 1921 vol 140 cc920-1
51. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Prime Minister whether he has received a letter from 20 religious leaders in England and Scotland of all denominations condemning murders and reprisals on both sides in Ireland and calling on His Majesty's Government to take the initiative in arranging a truce as a preliminary to an agreed settlement whether he has sent any reply, and, if so, what is it; and whether he is taking steps to adopt the suggestion of these religious leaders?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The reply is at present under consideration and will be sent in the course of the next few days.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

Does that mean that the Prime Minister has considered taking some steps towards trying a different policy with regard to Ireland?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

If the hon. and gallant Gentleman will accept a simple explanation it means exactly what it says. The reply is at present under consideration and it will be sent in the course of a very few days. At the moment other very urgent matters are occupying the attention of the Prime Minister.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

Will the right hon. Gentleman reply to the third part of my question?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I have nothing to add to what I have already said.

Mr. LYNN

Has the right hon. Gentleman received any protest from the hon. and gallant Gentleman when policemen only are being murdered?
