HC Deb 12 April 1921 vol 140 c901
72. Sir WILLIAM DAVISON

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether the charwomen who clean the various Government offices are being paid at the rate of 1s. 6d. an hour; how many women are being employed at this rate; and what is the annual sum payable under this head?

Lieut. - Commander YOUNG

The general rate for charwomen in London offices is 15s. 6d. a week, plus cost of living bonus from time to time current, making a total of 41s. a week at present rates. This remuneration covers a minimum attendance of 30 hours a week, with liability to work up to 42 hours a week, if required, without additional remuneration; and, on the basis of the minimum hours required, works out at 1s. 4d. an hour. Collected statistics are not available as to the second and third parts of the question, but particulars in regard to individual Departments will be found in the Estimates.
