HC Deb 12 April 1921 vol 140 c926
63. Mr. R. RICHARDSON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the total number of persons paying licence duty for the sale of alcoholic liquors, and the total amount received on account of all such licences during the year ended 31st March last, and the total amount received as club tax during the same period?

Lieut.-Commander YOUNG

As the reply is in tabular form I will ask my hon. Friend's permission to circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

The following is the answer:

No Revenue statistics are kept as to the total number of persons paying licence duty. The Revenue records deal with the total number of licences issued for the sale of intoxicating liquor, and the total amount received in respect thereof. In a considerable number of cases several licences are held by the same person. Exact figures for the year ended 31st March last are not yet available, but, approximately, the figures are as follow:

Year ended 31st March, 1921
Total number of "on" and "off" licences issued for the sale of intoxicating liquor 172,000
Total amount of licence duty received in respect of licences issued for the sale of intoxicating liquor £3,727,000
Total amount of Club Duty received £380,000
