HC Deb 11 April 1921 vol 140 c724
78. Lord H. CAVENDISH-BENTINCK

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he has made further inquiry into the death of Andrew Moynihan, who was killed while being taken by a number of Auxiliaries from Killarney to Tralee; and whether he can now say whether the military authorities charged Mrs. Moynihan £10 for the coffin into which they put her husband and £6 for a motor car in which to take the body home?

Mr. HENRY

As I stated in reply to a question by the Noble Lord on the 10th ultimo, the finding of the court of inquiry in this case was that the deceased attempted to escape from custody and that no blame in the matter of his death attached to any member of his escort. I am informed by the Commander-in-Chief that from the very careful inquiries he has made he is satisfied that the allegation that Mrs. Moynihan was charged by the military authorities for the coffin or other funeral expenses of her husband is quite untrue.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the statement about Moyihan being killed whilst trying to escape is generally discredited both in Ireland and this country?
