HC Deb 06 April 1921 vol 140 c249
17. Rear-Admiral ADAIR

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether any and, if so, how many torpedoes were fired from battleships at the battle of Jutland; whether the retention of torpedo tubes is considered necessary; and whether the space occupied by them would be better used if converted to wings and water-tight compartments?

Mr. AMERY

The numbers of torpedoes fired from battleships and battle-cruisers, respectively, during the battle of Jutland were five and seven. It is not in the public interest to give the further information asked for.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Are the Admiralty not satisfied that every opportunity for firing torpedoes with any chance of success was taken in the battle, and, if so, will the right hon. Gentleman ascertain what the number fired could have been?

Mr. AMERY

I could not answer that without notice
