18. Mr. T. THOMSONasked the Secretary of State for War how many British railway wagons were sent overseas during the period of the War; how many have been returned; and when the remainder, if any, will be brought back?
§ Sir A. WILLIAMSONTwenty-nine thousand seven hundred and ninety-two railway wagons, belonging to the British railway companies, were sent overseas during the War, and of these 28,671 had been returned up to 17th October. The number still to be returned does not exceed 650, and these are being brought back as fast as they are produced by the French railways. In addition, there are about 250 wagons belonging to the War Department, which remain to be returned to this country. It will be appreciated that the search for these wagons is a lengthy process. I would add that the French authorities have agreed to pay for all wagons not forthcoming by 31st January next.
§ Major NALLDo those figures include wagons sent to Palestine, and is it proposed to bring them back from the Egyptian railways?
§ Sir A. WILLIAMSONI cannot answer that without notice.
§ Sir A. BENNHave these wagons been returned in the condition they are now in or were repairs carried out?
§ Sir A. WILLIAMSONI think they are being returned in the condition in which they are now.
