HC Deb 21 October 1920 vol 133 cc1074-5
53. Dr. MURRAY

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether, as stated by the Bishop of Zanzibar, any native, under 50, in good health and not in regular employment, who is registered under the Adult Male Persons Registration Order, must do any work within the Protectorate which the Labour Board may order?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Lieut.-Colonel Amery)

The answer is in the affirmative subject to the qualifications that the work must be of a public nature for the general good of the Protectorate and that anyone who has during the year worked for 60 days either under the provisions of the Decree or for any private employer is exempt from further work under the Decree.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Will the hon. and gallant Gentleman say whether the Colonial Office got the example of forced labour from Soviet Russia?
