46. Mr. MALONE

asked what are the total numbers of unemployed now recorded; and when the palliative measures proposed by the Cabinet will commence to reduce these numbers?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Sir Montague Barlow)

I have been asked to reply to this question. The number of persons claiming Out - of - Work Donation or Unemployment Insurance Benefit at 19th October was 338,817. As regards the second part of the question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the full statement made by the Prime Minister on Tuesday last in reply to a question by the hon. Member for Huddersfield, and in particular to his reply to a supplementary question by the hon. and gallant Member for Wandsworth Central.
