HC Deb 21 October 1920 vol 133 c1051
7. Mr. MALONE

asked the Chief Secretary whether he is aware that James Larkin is now in Dannamora prison, United States of America, serving a term of five years; whether he is aware that owing to the special nature of the work he is employed on he has developed consumption and is in a very critical condition; and whether His Majesty's Government have made any representations to the Government of the United States with a view to releasing Larkin for necessary treatment?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Cecil Harmsworth)

I have been asked to answer this question. I am aware that James Larkin was sentenced by the United States Courts to a term of imprisonment on a charge of having advocated the overthrow of the United States Government by violence. I have no information with regard to his condition, and the matter is not one on which representations could properly be made by His Majesty's Government to the United States Government.

Mr. MALONE

Are we to understand that His Majesty's Government has no sympathy for its subjects in foreign lands?
