HC Deb 20 October 1920 vol 133 cc915-6
31. Major MACKENZIE WOOD

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether he can state the number of men who have been up to 1st October settled on the land under Part I. of the Scottish Land Settlement Act and under the tenure of the Small Landholders Acts, respectively, since the passing of the Land Settlement Act.

Mr. MUNRO

One hundred and twenty-two men have been settled under Part I. of the Act of 1919, and 101 under Part II. of the Act. I may add that it is anticipated that from 350 to 400 additional holders will be settled at the Martinmas term—11th November next.

32. Major WOOD

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether he can state the number of acres purchased under the Land Settlement Act up to 1st October; the amount expended in land purchase; and the amount which has been granted by way of advances or free gifts to settlers?

Mr. MUNRO

Up to 1st October, 1920, the Board bad acquired 126,387 acres under the Land Settlement (Scotland) Act, 1919, at a cost of £352,861. The sum required to assist settlers in works of equipment and providing stock in respect of schemes on these properties is approximately £576,000. Only a small part of this amount has actually been advanced, as little of the land embraced in the properties in question which were acquired this year is yet in actual occupation by the Board, or the holders, for reasons which I have already explained in this House.
