HC Deb 17 November 1920 vol 134 cc1888-9
70. Mr. MacVEAGH

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he has received any official reports confirming the statement that three men in plain clothes describing themselves as Black-and-Tans demanded admission to 157, North Circular Road, Dublin, after midnight on the 1st instant; whether the house was occupied only by two ladies and a housekeeper, all of whom wore subsequently fired at by these men; whether a military party immediately afterwards arrested four Army officers stationed at Marlborough Barracks named Mackin, Templeton, Sinclair, and Popplewell; whether these officers in mufti left the barracks after curfew when no civilians were in the streets; whether when arrested some of them were under the influence of drink and in possession of service revolvers with spent bullets; whether they allege that the three ladies in the house fired on them; and whether these officers have been brought to trial; and, if so, with what result?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

My attention has been called to these allegations, but, pending The result of an inquiry which the Commander-in-Chief has directed to be made into the matter, I am not in a position to make any statement.

Mr. MacVEAGH

My question to the right hon. Baronet was whether he has received any official reports confirming this statement, and can we have an answer yes or no to that?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

I have not received any official reports.

Mr. MacVEAGH

I have a copy of one of the reports.

Mr. DEVLIN

Docs the right hon. Baronet, read the reports he gets from his own officers before he answers questions?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

I do.

Mr. DEVLIN

I do not believe it.

Mr. MacVEAGH

You received that report, any way.
