HC Deb 17 November 1920 vol 134 c1862
12. Mr. KENYON

asked the Secretary of State for India whether any Acts or Regulations are in force in India, or any part thereof, providing for deportation; if so, what are these Acts and Regulations; and what is their nature?

Mr. MONTAGU

Bengal Regulation III. of 1818 and corresponding Madras and Bombay Regulations give certain powers of restraint within India without judicial trial for the protection and security of the British Dominions. The Foreigners' Act of 1864 gives certain powers to deport aliens, and the European Vagrancy Act of 1874 contains powers of deporting destitute vagrants back to Europe. Apart from these, there is no provision for deportation from India except a temporary Regulation under the Defence of India Act, 1915.
