HC Deb 10 November 1920 vol 134 cc1167-8
83. Sir W. SEAGER

asked the President of the Board of Education whether there are any ex-service men being trained as elementary school teachers; if so, how many; and whether he anticipates that the response from suitable ex-service men will be so satisfactory as to ensure the efficient staffing of the schools in the future?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. Fisher)

Grants under the Government scheme for the higher education of ex-service students have been made to 4,582 ex-officers and men to enable them to take courses of training for the teaching profession. I have every reason to hope that these men will make efficient teachers, but I am, of course, not looking solely to this source of supply to staff the schools.

Sir W. SEAGER

Will the right hon. Gentleman give publicity to these training colleges, so that others may be attracted to the colleges?

Mr. FISHER

Certainly.
