HC Deb 09 November 1920 vol 134 c990
77. Mr. W. COOTE

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if he is aware that on the evening of the 24th proximo a young lady was driving a pony and trap on her way to play the organ at divine service in the parish church, Cavan, when she was fired at by Sinn Feiners, who met her on the public road; and that she was shot through the lung and is at present in a very critical condition; and will he see that a sufficient force is sent into this district to maintain order?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

According to a police report which I have received, this occurrence did, in fact, take place as stated in the hon. Member's question, except that no information has yet been forthcoming as to the person or persons who committed this outrage. Every effort is being made by the police to trace the individual who committed the outrage. I am glad to state that according to the same report the lady is now progressing favourably. As I have already stated in this House, the Forces of the Crown in Ireland are increasing day by day in strength and efficiency, and their disposition is constantly under review with the object of securing the most effective action for the restoration of order throughout the country as a whole.

Mr. DEVLIN

Has any effort been made to arrest the person who shot the woman in the West of Ireland with a baby in her arms?
