28. Mr. RAPER

asked the Minister of Labour what was the total number of men who did not serve in the Navy, Army, or Air Force during the Great War employed in Government Departments on, respectively, the 1st January, 1920, and the 1st September, 1920, and how many ex-service men have been discharged from Government Departments since the 1st January last?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Baldwin)

The total number of men, who did not serve in the Navy, Army or Air Force during the War, employed in Government Departments, as denned for the purpose of the periodical returns presented to Parliament in this connection, was, on the 1st January, 1920, 144,144, and on the 1st September, 1920, 124,703. Without circularising the Departments I cannot state the number of ex-service men who have been discharged since the 1st January, 1920, but the total number of ex-service men employed in Government Departments has risen by 15,791 from 110,894 on the 1st January to 126,685 on the 1st September.
