HC Deb 18 June 1917 vol 94 cc1457-9
Mr. BILLING

I desire to ask the leave of the House to move the Adjournment this evening on a matter of urgent public importance, namely, to call attention to the resolution passed at the meeting of London citizens yesterday demanding that the Government shall commence a policy of air reprisals over enemy country without delay, and institute a reasoned system of warning.

Mr. SPEAKER

The form in which the hon. Member proposes to move the Adjournment of the House, of calling attention to the resolution passed, will not, I think, quite do. The earlier portion is really irrelevant. The hon. Member is

entitled to refer to it in the course of his speech. I will put it in this way: That the hon. Member for East Herts asks leave to move the Adjournment of the House, in order to call attention to a definite matter of argent public importance, namely, the desirability of the Government commencing a policy of air reprisals over enemy country without delay, and instituting a reasoned system of warning. Has the hon. Member the leave of the House?

Less than forty Members, but not less than ten, having accordingly risen—

Mr. BILLING

I beg to claim a Division, so that the people of this country may know who are for and who against.

Question put, "That leave be given to move 'That this House do now adjourn.' "

The House divided: Ayes, 25; Noes, 183.
