Mr. MONTAGUE BARLOWasked the Home Secretary whether he will have inquiries made into the case of John Carless, who, on Monday, 30th September, was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment for an assault on the police while in discharge of their duty; whether he is aware that the alleged assault took place when Carless was acting under great excitement, having been engaged, at considerable danger to himself, in rescuing horses from a fire; and whether he will review the case, with a view to favourably considering the remission of the sentence?
§ Mr. McKENNAI have made inquiry into the facts of this case and regret that I do not feel justified in recommending any reduction of the sentence passed on the offender.
