What was the annual government contribution to the railways (a) for the last five years of British Rail and (b) for each year since privatisation; and [HL618]

What was the budget for their contribution to the railways in the 2000 Ten Year Plan and for the year 2004–05; and what budget they consider appropriate for the railways to receive in succeeding years. [HL619]

Historic and forecast public spending on all modes of transport is set out in table A3 of Transport 2010 The 10 Year Plan published in July 2000 as supplemented by table A1.1 of Delivering Better Transport: Progress Report published in December 2002. My right honourable friend the Secretary of State for Transport has made a Statement setting out the funding levels for rail for the remainder of Network Rail's current regulatory control period.
