HL Deb 02 November 2004 vol 666 cc29-30WA
Lord Berkeley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the contingent public sector liability to fund the seven new Class 222 Meridian nine-car diesel-powered trains, ordered by National Express on the instruction of the Strategic Rail Authority and now reported to be surplus to current requirements. [HL4632]

Lord Davies of Oldham

There is no public sector liability in respect of the Class 222 Meridians. They were acquired through a private commercial arrangement between National Express Group and HSBC Rail. Should the trains prove surplus to requirements, it will be for the companies to decide what should be done with them.
