What has been the percentage increase in the number of offenders in the UK who have been given (a) custodial sentences, and (b) community service punishment in each of the last 10 years; and whether they can explain the differential rates of increase.[HL2672]

The available information, from the Home Office court proceedings database, is given in the table. It shows the number of persons sentenced to a community sentence, of which: the number sentenced to a community punishment order, and the number sentenced to immediate custody for all courts in England and Wales, for each of the years 1993 to 2002. It also provides the percentage change for the numbers
