HL Deb 28 April 2004 vol 660 cc88-90WA
Lord Jacobs

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many people are awaiting a hip replacement in the National Health Service; what is the maximum time that any are waiting; how many hip replacements were carried out in 2003; and what is the current monthly rate of demand for hip replacements. [HL2462]

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Lord Warner)

Data are not collected centrally on waiting times for hip replacements, nor are they collected centrally for rate of demand for hip replacements.

The total number of hip replacements in 2002–03 was 77,902*.

*Notes

Finished Consultant Episode (FCE) An FCE is defined as a period of admitted patient care under one consultant within one healthcare provider. Please note that the figures do not represent the number of patients, as a person may have more than one episode of care within the year. OPCS4 codes W37-W39 and W46-W48 have been used to define Hip Replacements.

All Operations count of Episodes These figures represent a count of all FCE's where the procedure was mentioned in any of the 12 (four prior to 2002–03) operation fields in a HES record. A record is only included once in each count, even if an operation is mentioned in more than one operation field of the record.

Ungrossed Data Figures have not been adjusted for shortfalls in data (i.e. the data are ungrossed).
