HL Deb 27 November 2002 vol 641 cc43-4WA
Lord Moynihan

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they intend to take any action in response to the reported statement by the Chairman of the Convention on the Future of Europe that the admission of Turkey to the European Union would mark the end of the European Union. [HL57]

The Minister for Trade (Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean)

M Giscard d'Estaing is entitled to express his personal thoughts on the admission of Turkey to the European Union. This does not, however, reflect the views of this Government. We believe Turkey's accession to the EU would be in the best interests of Britain and indeed Europe as a whole. We have repeatedly made clear that we want to see Turkey in the EU in accordance with. the conditions that all candidates have to meet.
