HL Deb 08 May 2001 vol 625 c149WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their analysis of the scale of forced and bonded labour in India, Nepal, Pakistan and other countries where it exists; and what representations they are making to the governments concerned. [HL2026]

Baroness Amos

Many forms of forced labour, including bonded labour, exist throughout the world. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) Global Report on Forced Labour, to be discussed by the International Labour Conference in June, will provide a review of the present position.

The Government strongly support the implementation of the ILO's core labour standards which outlaw all forms of forced labour. We continue to work with, and support, international bodies, national governments and civil society organisations to encourage all countries to ratify, and implement effectively, the internationally agreed conventions which support these standards.
