HL Deb 03 May 2001 vol 625 c108WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give boards of visitors the task of monitoring and reporting to the chief inspector on the implementation of action plans formulated after inspections at their prisons by the chief inspector. [HL1974]

Lord Bassam of Brighton

The role of the boards of visitors has recently been the subject of a very comprehensive review by a working group chaired by the right honourable Sir Peter Lloyd. The working group specifically rejected any suggestion that boards should be incorporated into the office of the chief inspector, but nevertheless I am sure my right honourable friend the Minister responsible for prisons and probation will want to give the noble Lord's proposal careful consideration when he considers how best to take forward the report's recommendations.
