To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of total UK public expenditure was accounted for by expenditure on(a) defence, (b) police, (c) health, (d) education, (e) pensions, (f) unemployment benefits, (g) overseas aid, (h) agriculture, fisheries and food and (i) road building and maintenance in the last year for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement. Public expenditure by function is presented in Chapter 4 of Public Expenditure Statistical Analyses 2000–01 (CM 4601).

The specific series requested by the question are presented as a percentage of total managed expenditure on services in the following table.
