HC Deb 22 July 1999 vol 335 c633W
26. Mr. Ben Chapman

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the role of the EU Anti-fraud Office. [91123]

Ms Hewitt

The ECOFIN Council adopted a Regulation on 25 May regarding a new European Anti-fraud Office which will be operationally independent within the Commission. The Office was established on 1 June. The final form of Office is in line with the Chancellor's initiative at the January ECOFIN Council.

The Office will be responsible for investigating fraud in the Community institutions and recommending follow-up action to be taken as a result of its investigations. It will also assist member states to co-ordinate anti-fraud work in respect of the EU budget and contribute to the design and development of methods of fighting fraud and other illegal activity.
