To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many times he or his junior Ministers have paid official visits to(a) the Czech Republic, (b) Poland, (c) Hungary, (d) Slovenia, (e) Estonia and (f) Cyprus since May 1997; and what was the purpose of each visit. [67701]

[holding answer 27 January 1999]: The Treasury is actively pursuing contacts with all of the applicants to the European Union, including inward and outward visits at official and ministerial level.

In addition the Financial Secretary visited Customs and Excise?s UK International Assistance Programme in Prague, Czech Republic between 6–8 November 1997.
