Letter from Peter Nutt to Mrs. Virginia Bottomley, dated 22 February 1999: The Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions has asked Lawrie Haynes, Chief Executive of the Highways Agency to reply to your recent question about how many miles of single carriageway and how many traffic lights there are on the A3 between London and Portsmouth. I am replying in Mr. Haynes' absence. The A3 around Hindhead in south west Surrey is the last remaining section of single carriageway between Wandsworth in south west London and Portsmouth. There are twenty sets of traffic lights on the A3 between London and Portsmouth, sixteen in Wandsworth, three in Kingston and one at Hindhead.
