In his Budget speech, on 17 March 1998, Official Report, columns 1097–112, the Chancellor announced his intention of introducing a fairer and more environmentally sensitive system of vehicle excise duty. A consultation document setting out the options for reform will be published shortly. Details of the new VED scheme will be determined as a result of that consultation.
