To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many people currently in receipt of severe disablement allowance became eligible to receive the allowance at age 20 years or over. [59834]

The information is not available in the format requested. Such information as is available is as follows.

As at March 1997, the latest date for which information is available, there were 385,000 Severe Disablement Allowance (SDA) recipients. Of those, 134,000 were ex-Housewives Non Contributory Invalidity Pension or ex-Non Contributory Invalidity Pension recipients who were transferred automatically on to SDA when it was introduced in 1984. Of those qualifying for SDA after that date, 174,600 did so at the age of 20 or over.
