HC Deb 12 November 1998 vol 319 c302W
Mr. Malcolm Bruce

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the total level of net public sector investment in real terms in 1997–98 prices for the years(a) 1992–93 to 1996–97 and (b) 1997–98 to 2001–2002; and if he will make a statement. [59474]

Mr. Byers

Cash figures for public sector net investment can be found in Table PSAT4 in the First Release (Public sector accounts 2nd quarter 1998) published by the ONS on 24 September 1998. Figures for the GDP deflator are kept in the House of Commons Library.

The series for 1997–98 to 2001–02 can be derived from the cash figures given in Table B12 and the projections of the GDP deflator given in Table B5 of the November 1998 Pre-Budget Report. Net public investment will double, as a share of national income, over the next three years. This will help to provide infrastructure essential to a modern, dynamic economy.
