Mr. Webb

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the probability of(a) a man and (b) a woman who reaches the age of 18 years in 1998 living up to or beyond the age of (i) 60, (ii) 65, (iii) 70, (iv) 75 and (v) 80 years. [57940]

Ms Hewitt

[holding answer 3 November 1998]: Using the projected future mortality rates underlying the 1996-based population projections for the United Kingdom carried out by the Government Actuary's Department, it is estimated that the probability of someone aged 18 in the United Kingdom living up to or beyond the age of 60, 65, 70,76 and 80 is as follows:

Probability of someone aged 18 in the UK reaching age
60 65 70 75 80
Male 917 875 806 703 556
Female 942 919 877 808 703
