HL Deb 16 March 1998 vol 587 cc101-2WA
Lord Morris of Manchester

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the rate of problem gambling among those aged 16–18 in respect of:

  1. (a) fruit machines;
  2. (b) scratchcards;
  3. (c) the National Lottery; and
  4. (d) Pronto. [HL956]

Lord Williams of Mostyn

We understand that no empirical research into problem gambling has been undertaken in relation to this age group.

I understand that a survey undertaken for OFLOT last year showed that about 8 per cent. of 16–18 year-olds played National Lottery scratchcards and spent on average between £1.60 to £3.00: 36 per cent. said they had played the last draw and had spent an average of £1.64.
