HL Deb 05 March 1998 vol 586 c179WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in the light of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's mission statement, and in particular the undertaking that "we shall work through our international forums and bilateral relationships to spread the values of human rights, civil liberties and democracy which we demand for ourselves", they have any proposals to make for the European Union to help the people of Indonesia. [HL756]

Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean

We are taking forward a number of Indonesia-related initiatives in line with our mission statement. As far as the European Union is concerned, during our Presidency we are working to arrange a visit by Troika Ambassadors to East Timor and we are preparing a draft resolution on East Timor at the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva. We are also considering making other proposals.
