HL Deb 08 June 1998 vol 590 cc67-8WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they were consulted by, and if so agreed with, the United States authorities that in the event of attacks being made on Iraq earlier this year, "jamming aircraft" should be ready to "jam broadcasters' equipment, lest their reports aid the enemy" and to "zap electronic journalists' gear" (Aviation Week, 20 April); and, if they were not consulted, or did not agree, what is their view of such jamming. [HL1959]

The Minister of State, Ministry of Defence (Lord Gilbert)

Her Majesty's Government are not aware of any plans to conduct "jamming operations" against broadcast media during the recent Iraq crisis. The UK would not as a matter of course plan to carry out such operations.
