To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what timescale he has set for the Registrar General to present to Ministers an options paper on access to registration records. [54960]

Ms Hewitt

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the Director of the Office for National Statistics. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from Tim Holt to Mr. David Lidington, dated 31 July 1998: As Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your recent parliamentary question on a timescale for an options paper on access to registration records. No timetable has been set for the production of the options paper. The options paper will consider the use of information technology to improve the service to customers and to provide better data management. It will also consider the possibility of working with a wide variety of organisations outside the public sector.
