HC Deb 16 December 1998 vol 322 c567W
Sir Alastair Goodlad

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has received about a possible tax on pesticides; and if he will make a statement. [63451]

Ms Hewitt

We have received a number of representations on a possible tax on pesticides. As my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced in the Pre-Budget Report, work is currently being carried out into whether a tax or charge on pesticides would be an effective way to reduce pollution. There is evidence to suggest that pesticides have harmful effects on wildlife, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and on human health. The Government will evaluate the findings of the research project, and the results of other ongoing work, in considering how best to proceed. No decision has yet been taken on whether to proceed with a tax or charge on pesticides.
